SUNOL, Alameda County — The East Bay Regional Park District changed a long-standing requirement for the Ohlone Wilderness Trail this year: hikers no longer need to buy an Ohlone trail permit as of January 1, 2026.
The district’s official trail page says no new trail permits are being sold and the old requirement no longer applies. That does not mean the entire trail or every activity is unrestricted.
What overnight travelers still need
Backpackers planning to stay overnight at designated sites must obtain a reservation in advance. The district says reservations are generally required at least two business days before arrival. Camping outside designated locations is not allowed simply because the hiking permit requirement ended.
Water and access remain important
The district’s current water advisory says wilderness sources are not potable without treatment. Hikers should plan appropriately, watch seasonal gate schedules at Sunol and Del Valle access points, and check any trail closures before beginning a long hike.
Some access points have parking fees. The permit policy does not waive those charges. Visitors traveling with dogs should review the separate daytime-only dog restrictions and related rules.
